More precise level measurement for better process control
New level transmitters on a first-stage separator replaced instruments with spurious failures, giving the control room measurements it can trust.
1The challenge
Spurious failures on the existing level instruments on a first-stage separator created uncertainty in the central control room and made process control difficult. The new instruments needed a modified design to fit where headroom was limited.
2Our solution
- Two new nucleonic level transmitters, with design modifications for the limited headroom
- Fibre from the equipment room to the separator, power supply and integration into the technical network
- Modifications in the DCS and HMI, and signals made available for onshore analysis
- A change-over strategy that allowed the work to be done during operation
- A plan for safe handling of radioactive waste, and full lifecycle documentation
3The result
- More precise level measurement and fewer false alarms in the control room
- Slugs can now be detected
- Chemical additives against emulsion and foam can be reduced, based on precise measurements
- Stable operation since start-up
